The Murmel is a Tier 1 Pet, available in the Unicorn Pack. When a friend levels up, the Murmel gains both attack and health that last until the end of battle. Levelling the Murmel increases the stats gained from its abilty.

Strategy

Murmel isn't a particularly great pet for the first two turns, it's both difficult and generally a bad idea to trigger its ability out of battle during tier 1 with its only good synergy being with a Level 1.5 Tsuchinoko. However this strategy still gives little reward early on as it only increases a fresh Murmel's stats to a temporary 2/4, a stat line that trades with Cuddle Toad, Cracked Egg, Barghest when inflicted with Spooked, and even other Tsuchinoko.

Despite all of that, Murmel becomes substantially more powerful once you enter the next two Tiers as Lucky Cat and Gingerbread Man become available. Stacking your team with Level 1.5 pets with the Gingerbread Man perk allows for Murmel to gain a massive stat boost every battle from temporary level ups. These temporary level ups will be your main strategy when using Murmel; Lucky Cat and multiple Murmel are your best options for pets to level in battle at this point as their abilities inherently benefit from the leveling/other pets leveling. A Level 1.5 Tsuchinoko remains a good enabler and Ogopogo provides further help in leveling more pets.

Cyclops can potentially help to further extend Murmel's usability but once Team Spirit becomes available it's better to start pivoting towards stacking those as your main level up pet.
